The information below will help make sure you begin your career with the Forest Service on time. Avoid delays with your start date by completing a few pre-employment steps.

Temporary Employees

If you are hired as a temporary employee, follow the tips below to help avoid start date delays.

  • Contact information: Provide accurate mailing address, phone number, and email.
  • Submit a complete OF-306: A link to this form is included in the Tentative Selection Notice. Completing this form will allow the hiring process to continue. Not responding to questions, or not submitting this form will cause employment delays.
  • Fingerprint cards: Human resources will mail you fingerprint cards to complete once your OF-306 is received. Follow the information provided to find a fingerprint processing location near you. Return fingerprint cards as quickly as possible as completed fingerprint cards help determine start dates. Start dates can be as early as one week after receiving the cards.
  • Drug testing: If pre-employment drug testing is required for your position, you will receive an email from a Drug Testing Coordinator that will provide information about how to complete the required test.
  • Start date: Talk to your supervisor to determine the best start date. Your start date will be included in a confirmation letter once the pre-employment process is completed.
  • eForms: The confirmation letter has a link to eForms, which must be completed as soon as possible so system accesses can be processed (including access to submit timesheets).

Permanent Employees

If you are hired as a permanent employee (including permanent fire), follow the tips below to help avoid start date delays.

  • Background investigation: Human resources will email you information to complete your eQip background investigation. A background investigation may not be required if you have a current investigation on file with the Office of Personnel Management. If you have a break in federal service more than two years, a new investigation is required.
    • If you are receiving a Transfer of Station (TOS), additional processing time is needed.
  • eForms: The confirmation letter has a link to eForms, which must be completed as soon as possible so system accesses can be processed (including access to submit timesheets).
