Meadow 504M68

By Joanna Clines, Sierra National Forest Botanist

The meadow does not have a name, just a number: 504M68. Data was collected on this fen on August 2, 2005, by botanists Eric Wrubel and Chris Winchell during a year when we had funding to specifically have a crew focused on field-truthing the fens we had mapped using aerial imagery. We delineated fen “stands” within meadows on aerial photographs. It actually turned out that most areas identified as fens on aerial photographs were actually fens. A variety of data was taken in each stand. A pit was dug to see how high the water table was and to measure the amount of organic soil in the upper 40 centimeters of soil. One stand was sampled in the 504M68 fen.

This is a slope and mound type, slope is about 5 degrees, and aspect is 304°, (West-Northwest). The dominant plant species recorded were: Eleocharis parishii, Juncus oxymeris, Hosackia oblongifolia var. oblongifolia, and a moss, Philonotis sp. Elevation was 6350 feet. Water saturated the upper 12 inches of the ground. The upper 40 centimeters of the soil was dark brown. The organic matter was not broken down for the upper 20 centimeters. From 20 to 22 centimeters, there was grey-brown sand. From 22 to 40 centimeters and greater, there was red brown organic soil with organic matter that was not broken down.

The peat depth was estimated to be 20 to 80 centimeters, using the steel probe and based on what was seen in the soil pit (shown in photo).
