Keeping water and soil healthy with sediment control

Water Bars

Water bars are a barrier embedded in the trail to divert water onto the adjacent forest floor. New technologies have displaced the use of water bars. They are not the preferred technique to divert water off trails but they are still used in places and therefore discussed here.

Water bars usually consist of a log with 1 to 2 inches sticking above the trail surface with a shallow trench dug on the uphill side to direct water off the trail.
