Effects of prescribed fire on soil nitrogen levels in a cutover Douglas-fir/western larch forest

The effects of a prescribed broadcast fire on soil nitrogen (N) levels and related soil properties were determined following the clearcutting of a 250-year-old Douglasfir/western larch stand in northwestern Montana. Soil N losses from burning amounted to slightly over 90 Ib/acre (100 kg/ha), all from the surface organic layers. This was 6 percent of the total N originally present in the surface 12 inches (30 cm) of soil.Document Type: Other Documents

One hundred years of timber harvest and reduced fire frequency have resulted in the conversion of once open stands of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests to dense forests dominated by Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). Selection harvest and harvest with prescribed fire have been identified as possible tools to restore ponderosa pine stands to presettlement stand structures.Document Type: Other Documents

Aspen clones have expanded into prairie during the last century at the northern edge of the Great Plains. Soil under aspen has more water and available nitorgen (N) than that under adjacent prairie. Mechanisms of range expansion and removal of mesquite in desert grasslands of the Southwestern United States

During the last 150 years, two species of mesquite trees in the Southwestern United States have become increasingly common in what formerly was desert grassland. These trees have spread from nearby watercourses onto relatively xeric upland areas, decreasing rangeland grass production. Management attempts to limit or reverse this spread have been largely unsuccessful.

Effects of prescribed fire on nutrient pools and losses from glades occurring within oak-hickory forests of central Kentucky

Forest openings, also known as glades, arise through a variety of mechanisms including disturbance (fire and blow downs) and local variation in soil or bedrock geology. They are common in many forest types and are often dominated by locally rare herbaceous species. Prescribed burning is increasingly used as a management approach for maintaining glades although little is known about the effects of fire on these habitats.

Slash pile burning is widely conducted by land managers to dispose of unwanted woody fuels, yet this practice typically has undesirable ecological impacts. Simple rehabilitation treatments may be effective at ameliorating some of the negative impacts of pile burning on plants and soils.
