Fuel reduction treatments are being conducted throughout watersheds of the western United States to reduce hazardous fuels in efforts to decrease the risk of high-severity fire. The number of fuel reduction projects that include near-stream environments is increasing, bringing new challenges to riparian management. Riparian areas are protected by administrative regulations, some of which are largely custodial and restrict active management.

Understory plants and forest floor materials constitute the surface fuels burned in prescribed fires. Many scientists from the Rocky Mountain Research Station Fire, Fuel, and Smoke (FFS) program are intimately involved with various aspects of fire management, including both prescribed fires and wildfires. These activities provide operational experience and the opportunity to observe fire in many different vegetation types. FFS employees have worked on lands managed by the National Park Service (NPS), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Forest Service (USFS), Colville Agency, Yakama Agency, State of Idaho, State of Alaska, and the Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association. Influences of prior wildfires on vegetation response to subsequent fire in a reburned Southwestern landscape

Large and severe wildfires have raised concerns about the future of forested landscapes in the southwestern United States, especially under repeated burning. In 2011, under extreme weather and drought conditions, the Las Conchas fire burned over several previous burns as well as forests not recently exposed to fire.

This package contains data used for the publication "Fortifying the forest: thinning and burning increase resistance to a bark beetle outbreak and promote forest resilience" (Hood et al. 2016). This study includes measurements from 1996-2012 at the Lubrecht Fire-Fire Surrogate Study Site, which was established in 2000 and includes four treatments, an untreated control, prescribed burn, a thinning, and a thinning followed by prescribed burn.
