Increasing trends in high-severity fire in the southwestern USA from 1984 to 2015

In the last three decades, over 4.1 million hectares have burned in Arizona and New Mexico and the largest fires in documented history have occurred in the past two decades. Changes in burn severity over time, however, have not been well documented in forest and woodland ecosystems in the southwestern US.

New Mexico’s forest resources, 2008-2014

This report presents a summary of the most recent inventory of New Mexico’s forests based on field data collected between 2008 and 2014. The results presented here summarize a complete cycle of New Mexico’s forest inventory, or 10 years’ worth of data collection, whereas the previous report was based only on 9 years’ worth of data collected under an accelerated implementation schedule between 2008 and 2012.

There is growing consensus that spatial variability in fuel loading at scales down to 0.5 m may govern fire behaviour and effects. However, there remains a lack of understanding of how fuels vary through space in wildland settings. This study quantifies surface fuel loading and its spatial variability in ponderosa pine sites before and after fuels treatment in the southern Rocky Mountains, USA.

Influences of prior wildfires on vegetation response to subsequent fire in a reburned Southwestern landscape

Large and severe wildfires have raised concerns about the future of forested landscapes in the southwestern United States, especially under repeated burning. In 2011, under extreme weather and drought conditions, the Las Conchas fire burned over several previous burns as well as forests not recently exposed to fire.

Birds of Southwestern grasslands: Status, conservation, and management

In the Southwestern United States, the grassland avifauna is collectively composed of a mixture of species found primarily in desert grasslands, shortgrass steppe, wet meadows, and alpine tundra (as used here, desert grasslands incorporate both arid grasslands and desert shrub grasslands). Of these habitats, desert grasslands and shortgrass steppe are the most extensive and support the greatest number of grassland bird species.

This chapter addresses the large native ungulates (American bison (Bos bison), elk (Cervus elaphus), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), and pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) of the grasslands. The information presented includes historical background, description of the species’ biology and ecology, and management in relation to domestic animals.
