The Lassen and Modoc National Forests are revising their Forest Plans, guided by the 2012 Planning Rule. This requires public and tribal input throughout the process and embraces the fact that ecological, social, and economic objectives are interrelated. Because ecological, social, and economic conditions have changed since the original forest plans were written and new science is available, preparing a science synthesis, guided by input from the public, tribes, and forest staffs, is the first step in a multi-step process that eventually leads to revised forest plans.

Overlapping bark beetle outbreaks, salvage logging and wildfire restructure a lodgepole pine ecosystem

The 2010 Church’s Park Fire burned beetle-killed lodgepole pine stands in Colorado, including recently salvage-logged areas, creating a fortuitous opportunity to compare the effects of salvage logging, wildfire and the combination of logging followed by wildfire.

Boreal forests, which are often undeveloped, are a major source of raw materials for many countries. They are circumpolar in extent and occupy a belt to a width of 1000 km in certain regions. Various conifer and hardwood species ranging from true firs to poplars grow in boreal forests. These species exhibit a wide range of shade tolerance and growth characteristics, and occupy different successional positions.

Pinus albicaulis Engelm. (whitebark pine) in mixed-species stands throughout its US range: Broad-scale indicators of extent and recent decline

We used data collected from >1400 plots by a national forest inventory to quantify population-level indicators for a tree species of concern. Whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) has recently experienced high mortality throughout its US range, where we assessed the area of land with whitebark pine present, size-class distribution of individual whitebark pine, growth rates, and mortality rates, all with respect to dominant forest type.

Physical and chemical properties of the foliage of 10 live wildland fuels

This data package contains data from over 3000 individual fuel elements collected as part of Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) project 11-1-4-19 "Determination of the effects of heating mechanisms and moisture content on ignition of live fuels." Data were collected each month during one of two one-year periods.
