Habitat suitability models can inform forest management for species of conservation concern. Models quantify relationships between known species locations and environmental attributes, which are used to identify areas most likely to support species of concern. Managers can then limit negative human impacts in areas of high suitability or conduct habitat improvements in areas of marginal suitability.

Spatial optimization of operationally relevant large fire confine and point protection strategies: Model development and test cases

This study introduces a large fire containment strategy that builds upon recent advances in spatial fire planning, notably the concept of potential wildland fire operation delineations (PODs). Multiple PODs can be clustered together to form a “box” that is referred as the “response POD” (or rPOD). Fire lines would be built along the boundary of an rPOD to contain a large fire.

NorWeST stream temperature data summaries for the western U.S.

NorWeST is an interagency stream temperature database and model for the western United States containing data from over 20,000 unique stream locations. Temperature observations were solicited from state, federal, tribal, private, and municipal resource organizations and processed using a custom cleaning script developed by Gwynne Chandler. Summaries of daily, weekly, and monthly means, minima, and maxima are provided for observation years.

NorWeST modeled summer stream temperature scenarios for the western U.S.

NorWeST summer stream temperature scenarios were developed for all rivers and streams in the western U.S. from the > 20,000 stream sites in the NorWeST database where mean August stream temperatures were recorded.

Visualizing carbon storage of harvested and burned forests

Forest management and natural disturbance can have a significant impact on storage or emission of greenhouse gases. Researchers with the Rocky Mountain Research Station designed the Forest Carbon Management Framework (ForCaMF) to model how harvested and burned stands contribute to overall carbon storage over different time scales. ForCaMF was used to conduct analyses across all 76 million ha of National Forest System land by Forest Service Region. Through informed forest management, additional forest carbon storage is achievable.
