During the last seventy years, numerous models have been developed to predict soil erosion; some models also predict concomitant sediment deposition. All have been proven inadequate and/or inaccurate in one respect or another. This paper discusses the application of the new-generation Unit Stream Power Erosion and Deposition (USPED) model at the US Army’s Yakima Training Center (YTC), Washington.

Recursive restriction estimation: an alternative to post-stratification in surveys of land and forest cover

Numerous government surveys of natural resources use Post-Stratification to improve statistical efficiency, where strata are defined by full-coverage, remotely sensed data and geopolitical boundaries. Recursive Restriction Estimation, which may be considered a special case of the static Kalman filter, is an attractive alternative. It decomposes a complex estimation problem into simple components that are sequentially processed.

Accuracy assessment for the U.S. Geological Survey Regional Land-Cover Mapping Program: New York and New Jersey Region

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with other government and private organizations, is producing a conterminous U.S. land-cover map using Landsat Thematic Mapper 30-meter data for the Federal regions designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Accuracy assessment is to be conducted for each Federal region to estimate overall and class-specific accuracies.

No thematic map is perfect. Some pixels or polygons are not accurately classified, no matter how well the map is crafted. Therefore, thematic maps need metadata that sufficiently characterize the nature and degree of these imperfections. To decision-makers, an accuracy assessment helps judge the risks of using imperfect geospatial data.

Effects of sample survey design on the accuracy of classification tree models in species distribution models

We evaluated the effects of probabilistic (hereafter DESIGN) and non-probabilistic (PURPOSIVE) sample surveys on resultant classification tree models for predicting the presence of four lichen species in the Pacific Northwest, USA. Models derived from both survey forms were assessed using an independent data set (EVALUATION).
