New Developments in Urban FIA: Forest Inventory, Landowner Survey, Wood Flows, and online app
October 10, 2018

Nancy Sonti, USDA Forest Service
Rebekah Zehnder, Texas A&M Forest Service

Since 2014, the USDA Forest Service's Urban Forest Inventory & Analysis (Urban FIA) program has been bringing the nation's forest census to urban areas. Forest Inventory work is underway in 35 cities in 24 states, with the goal of investing in at least 100 cities across the nation. In addition to plot data collection (Forest Inventory) across urban landscapes, the Urban FIA program includes an Urban Landowner Survey and analysis of Urban Wood Flows. These components provide information about attitudes and behaviors towards green space management on private residential lands, as well as urban wood processing and economic impact. In this webinar, Nancy Sonti will provide an introduction to all three components of Urban FIA, including key information on methods and timelines. Rebekah Zehnder will present an overview of My City's Trees, an interactive app that displays Urban FIA data, and will discuss key findings from data collected in Austin and Houston, TX that are informing management and advocacy efforts in the state.
