Forest Inventory and Analysis
Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) has been the primary source of data about the Nation's forests since 1930 and is mandated under the 1978 Research Act (PL 95-305, 16 U.S.C. 1641). Resource data are publicly available and provided online at the FIA website. Outputs are available in both English and metric units. Published reports summarizing and analyzing resource data are also available at the website.
FIA conducts annual inventories for all ownerships in each state across the country. A national standard sampling design was initiated for these inventories. The goal is to measure about 20% of the plots in the eastern half of the country and 10% of the plots in the western half of the country in each state each year, and to make the data available annually. The annual inventory system was initiated gradually over the last several years.
National Research Data Archive
Our new data archive holds citable research data sets collected and/or funded by Research and Development. It is a resource for discovering and accessing both short- and long-term research data, including Experimental Forest and Range data. Each archived data set comes with a complete set of metadata (data documentation) and any other information the researcher deemed important to understanding the data. Data catalog entries present the metadata and a link to the data; in some cases the link is to a different archive or to another website.
