Current Research

I am a Research Forester in the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Research Work Unit. FIA within the Northern Research Station is responsible for the forest land inventories of 24 states extending from the Northeast to the Great Plains. I am currently the lead analyst for North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. My current research interests include: developing a new methodology to create very high resolution land cover geospatial datasets from digital aerial imagery using a geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) technique; conducting landscape-level analyses of FIA and other geospatial data; and, finding new ways to incorporate GIS technology and remote sensing data into my research.

Research Interests

  • Develop methods to map tree and other land cover from very high resolution digital imagery
  • Create high-resolution geospatial datasets of agroforestry practices, primarily windbreaks and riparian forest buffers
  • Image-based change estimation
  • Conducting comprehensive assessments of tree cover in agricultural and other nonforest settings: how much is out there? where is it located? what are the important ecological/economic functions provided by these noninventoried trees?
  • Understanding the interactions between landscape structure and ecological processes

Why This Research is Important

Tree resources in agricultural and other nonforest settings are a small yet very important component of the landscape; however, information about them is lacking, especially geospatial datasets. The GIS-ready land cover products resulting from this research will provide a valuable baseline from which we can monitor and manage tree cover over time, and determine ecosystem function. In addition, there are many other potential uses of such a high resolution land cover dataset. For example, data collected on the ground could be combined with the mapped tree cover for modeling purposes, such as biomass and carbon sequestration estimation. Landscape-scale studies could incorporate this fine-resolution data into assessments of wildlife habitat and land use/land cover change. The output datasets will benefit other natural resource professionals, researchers, and agencies and will better meet research and management needs in areas where traditional forest inventory data is lacking.
