Mediated Settlement Agreement (MSA) Review
In July 1990, the Sequoia National Forest and eighteen other parties signed a landmark mediation agreement which resolved those parties' administrative appeals of the 1988 Sequoia National Forest Land and Resource Plan.
The parties were broadly representative of the Sequoia's client groups including the Sierra Club, Wilderness Society, Natural Resources Defense Council, Federation of Flyfishers, California Trout, Kaweah Flyfishers, the State of California Attorney General, Save-the-Redwoods-League, Sierra Forest Products, Sequoia Forest Industries, California Department of Parks and Recreation, Tule River Indian Tribe, Phantom Duck Club, California Cattlemen's Association, High Desert Multiple Use Coalition, California Association of Four-Wheel Drive Clubs, California Native Plant Society, and the American Motorcycle Association District #37.
The Mediated Settlement Agreement (MSA) covers a wide range of topics including giant sequoia grove management, riparian area management, timber management, and wildlife species, as well as such procedural matters as the content of project analyses, monitoring, and annual progress reports.
