Abstract:
This feature class depicts the stream extents with names as designated by hydrologists on the Coronado National Forest. This dataset is part of the USFS Southwestern Region Core Data Project. This project is designed to generate and maintain 15 vertically integrated resource data layers which are standardized across the Southwestern Region. These 15 layers are derived from a Master Arc coverage which maintains vertical integration.
Purpose:
The purpose of this feature class is to depict significant drainages on this National Forest. The feature class will be used to provide drainage information for any necessary analysis.

This edition has been created for regional analysis purposes by the Regional Office staff. Forest and/or district specific attribute items have been dropped from this edition. Attribute tables contain only those items documented in the 'Specifications for TVA Data Automation Contract'.

Accuracy and completeness was checked by manually comparing hardcopy plots, on-screen review, and reporting method with the source materials. Attributes for STRM_NAME were populated based on the "Specifications for TVA Data Automation Contract." Based on accuracy statements made for USGS topographic quadrangle maps. Targeted to National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy (NSSDA). Target coverage coordinate precision is double precision to accept up to 15 digits.NHD coordinates are created in decimal degrees with 7 digits to the right of the decimal place (e.g. .1234567). This level of precision in decimal degrees equates to between approximately .02 and 1 meter in projected coordinate units on the ground (depending on the latitude of the coordinate). Additional offsets to positions may have been introduced where there are many features to improve the legibility of map symbols. This occurs because much of the source data was derived from a cartographic source (DLG or CFF). As positional accuracy is improved through edits this cartographic constraint will be removed. In addition, the digitizing of maps is estimated to contain a horizontal positional error of less than or equal to 0.003-inch standard error (at map scale) in the two component directions relative to the source maps. Visual comparison between the map graphic (including digital scans of the graphic) and plots or digital displays of points, lines, and areas is used to assess the positional accuracy of digital data. Linear features of the same type along the adjoining edges of data sets are aligned if they are within a 0.02-inch tolerance (at map scale). At 1:100,000 scale, 0.02 inch is approximately 167 feet (50.8 meters), and at 1:24,000 scale, 40 feet (approximately 12.2 meters).
The National Map Accuracy Standards for 7.5 minute 1:24,000 quadrangles applies to this coverage, which state that a feature will be within approximately 40 feet of its true position.

The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a feature-based database that interconnects and uniquely identifies the stream segments or reaches that make up the nation's surface water drainage system. NHD data was originally developed at 1:100,000-scale and exists at that scale for the whole country. This high-resolution NHD, generally developed at 1:24,000/1:12,000 scale, adds detail to the original 1:100,000-scale NHD. (Data for Alaska, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands was developed at high-resolution, not 1:100,000 scale.) Local resolution NHD is being developed where partners and data exist. The NHD contains reach codes for networked features, flow direction, names, and centerline representations for areal water bodies. Reaches are also defined on waterbodies and the approximate shorelines of the Great Lakes, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico. The NHD also incorporates the National Spatial Data Infrastructure framework criteria established by the Federal Geographic Data Committee.

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION PERTAINS TO THE COVERAGE DATA MODEL General: Vintage 11 CFF digital data was the basis to create this coverage. In order to provide a complete network, stream centerlines through water features were created and are a part of this coverage. Gaps in connectivity gaps were fixed based on the rule of 1/2" or less, or from information provided by the Forest. Arcs were oriented for downstream directionality. Source and method was populated for all arcs. The STRM_NAME was identified by the Forest, using the PBS name, and populated on the respective arcs. The data set was checked for dangle errors. Errors were corrected and topology built for arc. A route subclass was created based on the item STRM_NAME and the route was oriented upstream. Technical: The CFFs will be the basis for the stream data. In some instances, the Forests may have additional attribute information to supplement this layer. If there is additional data, directions on how to handle this will be provided in the Data Assessment document for the individual processing unit. A connected network is to be built based on the stream and waterbody data from the V11 CFF. The first step is to extract the waterbody theme id arcs into one coverage coverage (using the standard list of applicable CFFs from the Data Specifications). (Sand areas (CFF 316) and wide washes (CFF 317) will be used for centerlining, but are not meant to be included in the waterbody coverage). Extract the streams arcs into another coverage. Working in the extracted stream coverage, with the waterbody coverage as a backcover, create the network by centerlining the waterbodies, coding CFF as 470 and SOURCE_CODE as 20 and METHOD as 08, connecting the stream segments as applicable (see Rules for centerlining below). Plots are then prepared by quad, color-coded by CFF and sent to the Forest for review and edit. The Forest will verify the CFF is correct, annotate on the plots where it is to be changed, annotate any additional gaps in connectivity to be fixed, identify significant stream names and extents to be routed (see Rules for Stream names in the Data Specifications document), and show general direction of stream flow. These plots are then returned to TVA and TVA makes the edits (in an extracted coverage) based on the annotation from the Forest Service. These edits include editing or adding a CFF (in attribute CFF1-CFF10), fixing any gaps in connectivity, and populating the item STRM_NAME in the arcs within the named stream extent, and orienting the arcs in the downward flow direction, using the "flip" command as needed. Once all edits are complete, the original data is deleted from the master quad coverage and the new, edited data is put back into the master quad coverage. At this point the stream data is complete. When the output coverage is produced in the final processing phase, a "route" will be created ("createroute" based on item "STRM_NAME") for all named streams and an upward direction will be applied to those routes.

This dataset was updated and fixed. The original dataset had some missing data. One quad sheet on the north end of the Forest was completely missing. Other areas on six other quad sheets had very thin data. The missing quad sheet was added using CFF data. The six areas that had very thin data were supplemented with NHD data. Where data was patched in the new data was edged matched with the old data. Attribute data was updated for the new data reflecting the new data source. Line direction was set for all new data in the Stream_ln feature class and new routes were created in the Stream_Route feature class. Approximately half of the lines in the Stream_ln feature class did not have their direction set correctly. This was fixed. Nearly all of the routes in the Stream_Route feature class were multi part features with measure errors resulting from the parts being out of order. This fixed. There are many gaps in the Stream_ln feature class where lines cross water bodies. Many of these were fixed but not all.
