Abstract:
Existing vegetation (EV) is the floristic composition and vegetation structure occurring at a given location at the current time. This feature set depicts the existing vegetation of the forests and grasslands of the Southwestern Region at the mid-scale as four products - life form, dominance type map units, canopy cover map units, and size map units at the time the source satellite images were acquired. Multi-season satellite images (Landsat-5 and/or Landsat ETM+) along with ancillary and derived data sets (e.g., Digital Elevation Models and spectral indices) were used to model vegetation at the mid-scale level, suitable for presentation at a scale of approximately 1:100,000. The mapping process conformed to national guidelines developed by the Forest Service as defined in the Existing Vegetation Classification and Mapping Technical Guide Version 1.0 (USDA Forest Service Gen. Tech. Report WO-67). A combination of pixel- and object-based classifiers were used to attribute polygons with life form, dominance type, canopy cover class, and size class. Polygons with shared attributes were subsequently aggregated for each product to the map units presented here.
Purpose:
The Southwestern Region existing vegetation mapping program (R3-EVP) is intended to meet the needs of forest plan revisions, national fire planning, and other landscape-level analyses by providing a consistent, region-wide dataset that depicts existing vegetation at the mid-scale level. The R3-EVP is a cooperative effort utilizing staff from both the Geospatial and Ecosystem Analysis and Planning units at the regional office, along with personnel from each forest or grassland. This approach combines specific technical expertise that exists only at the regional office with the local knowledge of ground conditions that exists at the individual forest or grassland. The purpose of this feature class is to depict and label the location boundaries of mid-level vegetation. The feature class will be used to provide vegetation information for landscape-level forest planning and analysis.

The primary data sources used to produce these maps were Landsat satellite images that were terrain-corrected, in reference to 1:24,000 USGS quadrangle maps, by the USGS EROS Data Center. Horizontal accuracy standards for these images were less than one pixel (30 m) RMS.

All Landsat scenes were acquired from the USGS EROS Data Center as geometrically and terrain-corrected images, and were subsequently corrected to at-satellite reflectance by Region 3 personnel. Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) accompanied the satellite images on the MRLC CDs. In addition to the original, multi-spectral and elevation data, derived data layers such as: NDVI; MSAV; Kauth-Thomas brightness, greenness, and wetness indices; and slope/aspect classes were calculated for use in the classifications. Additional biophysical data layers such as soils, temperature, and precipitation were also used. Definiens eCognition software (Definiens Imaging, 2003) was used to segment the Landsat data into polygons that had relatively homogeneous spectral characteristics. A combination of pixel- and object-based classifiers including Erdas Imagine, Definiens eCognition, and See5 were used to attribute polygons with life form, dominance type, canopy cover class, and size class. Polygons with shared attributes were subsequently aggregated for each product. Map units were created based on ecological similarity and accuracy assessment results. The reference data used for training in this project consisted of field sampled data, data from aerial photo interpretation, and legacy data collected by forest and grassland personnel. Mapping was done across all ownership types within the forest proclamation boundaries and a 1 mile buffer. In addition, Saguaro National Park East and Chiricahua and Coronado National Monuments were included in the mapped area.
