Educational Background

  • A.A.S. Forest Technology. May 1975, Thompson School of Applied Science, University of New Hampshire.
  • B.S. Forestry. December 1977, University of New Hampshire.
  • M.S. Forest Mensuration. May 1980. University of New Hampshire.
  • M.A. Statistics. December 1992, The Pennsylvania State University.
  • Ph.D. Forest Biometrics. August 1989, The Pennsylvania State University.

Research Interests

  • Problems in uneven-age forest management, especially optimal stand diameter distribution models.
  • Investigating new methods and exploring new adaptations of extant methods for sampling forest and wildlife populations.
  • Statistical methods in dendrochronology; specifically, the continued development of Kalman filtering methods applied to tree-ring time series.
  • The continued development of probability models to characterize distributions of stand structural variables.

Current Research

  • Applications of weighted/size-biased distributions for forest management and research. Recently, the theory of weighted distributions has been applied to two related problems in characterizing forest populations.
  • The stand diameter distribution has been characterized based on the distribution of basal area rather than number of trees. The relationship between the conventional diameter distribution and the "basal area-size" distribution has been mathematically established.Abstract
  • When fitting assumed distributions to horizontal point sampling data, weighted distributions also arise as a natural consequence of sampling with probability proportional to size, or "size-biased sampling." The consequences of fitting an assumed probability density function to the sampling distribution arising from individual horizontal point samples is considered. been mathematically established.Abstract
  • A computer program for researchers and practitioners which impliments Kalman filtering for trend monitoring of tree-ring data is currently under development. The accompanying documentation on the program (KfTREND) and underlying theory are in preparation.
  • New methods for sampling down coarse woody debris in forest ecosystems. Especially interesting are the new methods based on angle gauge sampling: Point and Transect Relascope Sampling (PRS, TRS, respectively). These methods work in manner analogous to horizontal point and line sampling with an angle gauge or wedge prism for standing trees.
