Help your kids enter the Smokey Bear & Woodsy Owl Poster Contest

An illustrated photo of Woodsy Owl painting next to a little girl. For more than 50 years, children in first through fifth grades have put crayon to paper, using their imagination to help convey Smokey Bear’s message of “Only YOU Can Prevent Wildfires!” and Woodsy Owl’s message of “Lend a Hand, Care for the Land!”

The contest is sponsored by the National Garden Clubs, whose members work tirelessly to host, evaluate and bring us the top winners in each grade category. From those grade-level winners, Forest Service employees help select the grand prize winner, who along with his or her family receives airfare and accommodations for a trip to the Nation’s Capitol.

Children who participate use drawings to demonstrate their knowledge about wildfire prevention and basic environmental conservation principles, such as reusing and recycling. This program fits well with other Forest Service programs that help teach young people the importance of this country’s natural resources and plant a seed of stewardship that we hope will grow as they develop.

Helping them enter the contest is simple:

  • Contact your local garden club
  • Help them learn more about wildfires and conservation
  • Talk to them about those subjects and how they feel about the subjects. This will help guide them toward their final design
  • Read all the rules on entering the contest.
