Picture of Mike Hallenbeck in his firefighting uniform Mike Hallenbeck, known affectionately as “Mikey,” was a 21-year-old ski-lift operator from a nearby community. 2015 was his first season as an OC-36 crew member. He had long wanted to be a wildland firefighter, and crew members recalled his enthusiasm for this opportunity to gain first-hand experience. On August 8, 2015 Mike was killed when he was struck by a falling tree. The final Learning Review Report for this incident is complete and available to all employees on the Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Center website.
