Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie volunteers and staff helped prepare for Memorial Day programs at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois. This was the eighth year that a group from Midewin visited the cemetery in a volunteer capacity to help prepare for Memorial Day programs. Several in the group were U.S. military veterans. Some wore special shirts commemorating the branches of the military in which they served. One Midewin staff member served in the U.S. Air Force in Afghanistan; another was stationed in Pearl Harbor with the U.S. Navy. Before heading back to Midewin, the group strolled through new blooms in the memorial gardens that are situated near a new life-size bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln.
