National New Leader Program graduates next generation of FS leaders

NEW MEXICO—Leaders come in all job series and at every grade level. The National New Leader Program, which just graduated its second class, helps new leaders take their skills to the next level.

The NNLP supports Forest Service leadership’s commitment to a positive work environment, succession planning, workforce development, and a continuous learning environment. Targeted to GS-7 to GS-11 employees, the program brings together high-performing, highly motivated employees from across the country to participate in a six-month development program focused on Leading Self.

The 37 participants in the fiscal year 2018 class represent diverse professional experiences from throughout the Forest Service. Over the last six months, they have assessed their individual leadership capabilities and strengths by learning about their own personality traits, leadership styles and conflict behaviors. They further developed their understanding of these traits individually and in a team environment. The second cohort graduated Sept. 21 after completing a rigorous curriculum that included a Personal Development Action Plan, a team project and presentation, a three-day shadowing assignment with a GS-13 or above leader, and a 30-day developmental assignment beyond the scope of their normal work duties.

Sponsored by the Human Resources Management Training and Employee Development branch, the NNLP uses assessments, experiential learning and individual development opportunities to give students foundational leadership skills. Communication, conflict management, team building and performance, problem solving and decision making are some of the core competencies addressed by the program.

Employees interested in applying for the fiscal year 2019 NNLP class can find additional program information on the HRM Training and Employee Development website. The call for nominations will be issued later this year.
