OREGON – In mid-September, a high-level delegation from Peru visited Oregon to learn from and share experiences with their USDA Forest Service counterparts. The visitors included the Peruvian Vice-Minister of Agriculture and the Vice-Minister of Environment. The delegation was hosted by the Siuslaw National Forest, the Pacific Northwest Regional Office as well as other local partners. The study tour was organized by the International Programs office with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development and is part of a broader effort to promote a collaborative, transparent and integrated approach to sustainable forest management in Peru.

The study tour exposed participants to models, best practices and lessons-learned in land management across agencies and different levels of government. During their visit to the Siuslaw National Forest, the delegation was able to view an active timber sale and to get to know a collaborative aquatic restoration project. The trip also offered participants space for reflection about current practices in Peru and potential opportunities for improvement.

In addition to visiting Siuslaw National Forest and the Regional Office, the delegation also spent time with the following partners and organizations: State of Oregon Retired State Forester Doug Decker, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, the International Wood Products Association, the Gorge Commission, Sustainable Northwest, the World Forestry Center and the Rural Voices for Conservation Coalition.
