Mathematical statistician works with Thailand while on science fellowship

On Feb. 23, in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Ashley Steel led the first science education workshop for 60 teachers, plus DNP staff, as a pilot demonstration of the "Science in the Parks" proposal.

Steel, supervisory mathematical statistician, is working with Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation through an Embassy Science Fellowship. Together they are drafting a proposal called “Science in the Parks” to support workshops for Thai teachers on the process of science inquiry using national parks as living laboratories.

Other focus areas of the proposal include interpretive programming that highlights cutting-edge Thai science, enriched interpretive materials on the ways that rivers connect forests to the sea and visitor use surveys.
