KAZAKHSTAN — The International Programs office partnered with the US Embassy in Astana, Kazakhstan, to gift 10 bur oak seedlings to the City of Astana as part of Expo 2017. The bur oak was selected by Forest Service specialists both for its ability to stand as a symbol of the United States and for its suitability for the harsh Astana climate. For optimal adaptability, the seedlings were sourced from North Dakota in partnership with Towner State Nursery.
The seedlings traveled to Astana together with a Presidential Delegation to the 2017 Expo, and were planted on August 30 by Ambassador George Krol at the site of Astana’s new botanical gardens. The planting ceremony was part of celebrations for Kazakhstan’s Constitution Day. Italy, Jordan, and Russia also gifted Astana with trees during the ceremony.
During his remarks, the Ambassador described the tree planting as, “A splendid example of friendship between the United States and Kazakhstan … This ceremony unites nations.”
