TPCM Team Honored at the Esri 2017 International Users Conference

Author: El Aran

For over 6 years, our Enterprise Program GIS staff has partnered with the Washington Office Ecosystem Management (WO EMC) and Human Dimensions Program (HD) to provide GIS Project Management, Development, Help Desk support for the Forest Service’s first online mapping, public commenting application. EMC and our Enterprise team are successfully collaborating with the Chief Information Office, Geospatial Management Office, and multiple Forest Service Program areas to integrate this tool as the go-to solution to meet the Open Gov Initiative, 2012 Planning Rule and the 2016-2020 FS Strategic Plan in providing internet-based tools and improve user interaction.

Talking Points Collaborative Mapping (TPCM) is an internet-based, dynamic mapping, public commenting site that is accessible on all personal computers, including mobile devices, and is free to use for All National Forests in their public commenting needs. It saves the Forest Service money as the application has been configured and is included already in our Enterprise License Agreement with Esri.  There are no additional costs for operations and maintenance. It is compatible with Story Maps and other ArcGIS online products. It meets the public commenting needs in support of Forest Planning, Wilderness, NEPA, Developed Recreation and much more. Multiple National Forests in every region have created about a hundred projects to meet their public commenting needs to date. By partnering with Esri, TPCM is able to provide automated data collection and is working to provide local and national leadership with a suite of analysis tool for on-demand reporting needs.

Aside from providing a paper and presentations at the conference, the TPCM team’s infographic entitled Talking Points Collaborative Mapping - Esri Crowdsource Reporter / Manager received third place in Esri’s Map Gallery submission in the Instructional Map category. At the conference, the TPCM team also met with Esri Developers and FS GIS Leadership—solidifying our continued partnership and collaborative efforts to provide the Agency and the Public the most contemporary tools as we move forward in caring for the land and serving people.
