This tech tip explains the differences between the three basic rail systems used on trail bridges and boardwalks, discusses Forest Service requirements, and provides a simple process for determining the basic rail system that best fi ts a particular structure. The three basic rail systems are based on the 2006 International Building Code (IBC 1013, "Guards"), the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials "AASHTO LRFD (Load and Resistance Factor Design) Bridge Design Specifi cations," and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration rail system (OSHA, CFR 29, Part 1910, Subpart D). If an analysis shows that a rail system is not warranted in backcountry and wilderness settings, curbs may be used for Forest Service trail bridges.
