Independence Day celebrates our right as Americans to enjoy our freedoms. Similarly, we can be proud that we work for an agency that protects Americans' right to the benefits of their national forests and grasslands.

As we head into the Independence Day, whether for a single day or for the rest for the week, many of us are looking forward to celebrating with family and friends. Enjoy this deserved time off and come back refreshed.

Remember not all of us have a day off tomorrow; we are still fighting fires across the nation and keeping visitors to our national forests and grasslands safe during their visit. But for those of us who do have that day off, this is a great opportunity to spend time with friends and family in one of our national forests and grasslands. And if you will be spending any time having fun out in the water, don’t forget that this year we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.

While summer is a time for fun, especially tomorrow, we must always remember to celebrate in a safe, responsible manner. This holiday, don’t forget to keep personal safety in mind. Be sure to handle food safely when cooking out; use extra caution when handling fireworks and know the fireworks laws for your state; and enjoy libations in moderation or make sure you have a designated driver to help prevent impaired driving. Be safe, be responsible and have a fun Independence Day!

Fireworks are illegal on public lands: every forest, every campsite, every day. #SafetyFirst
