Threats
- Alteration or destruction of its habitat through land-clearing, drainage modification, or timber-harvesting
- Lack of successful seedling establishment in the wild
- Grazing and trampling by livestock and wild hogs, and competition from invasive non-native plants
- Additional reasons for decline include changes in climatic conditions and the presence of a fungus and a weevil
