MonarchLIVE, A Distance Learning Adventure
Staff from the Forest Service International Programs worked with staff from Prince William Network (PWN) schools located in Virginia, and the Forest Service Washington Office of Conservation Education to implement “Monarch Live, A Distance Learning Adventure”. This project was in the planning stages for almost two years and the implementation took place during fiscal year 2009 over a seven-month period. The project included over 25 partners in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Five different webcast presentations were developed for the program. These included the first live television show from the Biosphere reserve in Mexico about the wintering habitat. There were four other programs (three in the US and one in Mexico). All but one of the programs was completed in both Spanish and English. Pointe Pelee National Park in Canada also participated in the project by posting information on the project website. Over 400,000 people participated in the project.
Pre- and post-tests were administered to a group of students. There was a difference of 22% in the pre- and post-tests. This project featured the greatest increase in learning.
The project accomplished a goal of reaching diverse communities in the United States and linking Mexican-Americans to the mountains of Mexico. The programs in Chicago, Illinois, and St. Paul, Minnesota, were held in locations with large percentages of diverse populations.
