Climate

Northern Utah enjoys four distinct seasons. Spring is mild and green with excellent skiing in the mountains and golf in the valley. Summer is warm with low humidity. The average high temperature is 93 degrees around Ogden, but mountain areas may be as much as 20 degrees cooler.

Fall is spectacular and pleasant. Winter brings skiers from around the world. Average snowfall in the mountains is 535 inches, while the valley receives about 64 inches annually. Average precipitation is 16 inches at Ogden to 60 inches in the mountains with most of it falling in the winter as snow. In July and August, there are occasional heavy thunderstorms, especially in the mountains.

Higher elevations can receive snow as early as September. Most other months are dry. Winter temperatures average 20 to 40 degrees, although it can get down to 0 degrees at times.

Lightning can be dangerous in Utah. The months of June to August, especially in the mountains have the most frequent lightning. Winds can be strong at times. In the winter, high winds can be dangerous, causing a wind-chill effect, drastically lowering temperatures. Drivers and outdoor folks need to plan and prepare for weather in Utah.

Winter conditions will be highly variable. In the forest, anyone traveling or recreating must be prepared for the worst conditions. Make sure you and your vehicles are in proper conditioning for the extreme conditions.
