Camping on the Ogden District


Camping within the developed campgrounds is recommended. That allows use of the public lands without the resource impacts created by primitive camping. It is also the safest way for those without experience or if your camping equipment is best suited for campgrounds.


PINEVIEW RECREATION COMPLEX

[Campground]Anderson Cove Campground

Located about eight miles east of Ogden at 5,000 feet elevation on the south shore of Pineview Reservoir in Ogden Valley. The site is flat and grassy with a variety of hardwood trees. The route is Utah Highway 39 through Ogden canyon. The managed season is generally about May 1 through September 20. The gate is locked the rest of the year.

Anderson Cove is a high standard campground with paved roads and spurs with a high level of security. Everyone must enter the campground past the entry station where a site is assigned or reservation voucher is checked. There is security overhead lighting and each toilet is lit inside. The main gate is locked each night at 10 p.m. to prevent unauthorized entry. A tire ripper prevents entry through the exit road. The campground is patrolled each night by a Weber County Sheriff Deputy or Forest Service Law Enforcement.

Jefferson Hunt Campground

Located 9.2 miles from Ogden at the South Fork Ogden River inlet to Pineview Reservoir. The site is flat and grassy with numerous mature cottonwood trees. Elevation is 5,000 feet. The route is on Highway 39 one mile east of Anderson Cove Campground. The turn-off is north and across the street from Chris' General Store.

SNOW BASIN RECREATION COMPLEX

Maples Campground

This campground is nestled in a secluded heavily wooded setting near Snow Basin Ski Area at 6,200 Feet about 18 miles travel distance from Ogden. The route is Utah Highway 39 through Ogden Canyon to Snow Basin Road (Utah Highway 226), then another 8-1/2 miles to the entrance to Snow Basin Ski Area lower parking lot. The road goes west through the parking lot, across a small stream, then turns north about a mile to the campground entrance. From the parking lot entrance the road is dirt and rough. It gets very slick when wet. Season normally runs from May 30 through September 5.

SOUTH FORK RIVER RECREATION COMPLEX

This is a three square mile piece of National Forest along the South Fork of the Ogden River. It contains eight campgrounds scattered along the corridor with varying levels of development. Camping and access to the river are the main recreation activities of this area.

Magpie Campground
Located at 5,200 feet elevation in South Fork Canyon 5.6 miles from Huntsville Junction and Utah Highway 166. The managed season is from approximately May 15 to October 31. This campground is heavily wooded with mostly cottonwood trees and other river-bottom types of vegetation. The South Fork of Ogden River flows through the campground.

Botts Campground
This small campground is located about six miles east of Huntsville on a curve in the river. The elevation is 5,200 feet. It has been a popular camping spot since the pioneers came to Utah. Although the trees are not thick, they are big and very old.

Hobble Campground

Hobble is one of the District's smaller campgrounds and is located in South Fork Canyon seven miles east of the Highway 39 Huntsville intersection. The camping units are surrounded by heavy growth of grasses and big trees. The season is approximately May 15 to October 31. During the rest of the year this campground may be used but no services are provided.

South Fork Campground

This campground was rebuilt in 1996 to improve the quality of camping and to reduce the impacts to the South Fork River. The road is gravel but each camp area is a cement pad with metal picnic tables. Located about seven miles east of Huntsville on Highway 39 along the shore of the South Fork Ogden River at an elevation of 5,200 Feet. Vegetation is thick grass and a mixture of river-bottom types of trees and shrubs. The season runs from May 15 through September 30.

Perception Park Campground/Picnicground

The campground is a little over seven miles east of Huntsville along Utah Highway 39. The campground was especially built for the use of the handicapped in the mid 1980's. This makes Perception Park one of the highest stardard campgrounds. Special facilities for handicapped include tables, fountains and paved walkways along the river that will accommodate wheelchairs. Concrete platforms with benched have been placed in several locations along the river for the enjoyment of the handicapped. Although the campground was built for the use of the handicapped, it is not for their exclusive use.

Perception Park also has three group reservation units which will accommodate either 40 (WCCU), 50 (GFWC), or 60 (McKay) people at one time. The managed season is generally from May 15 through September 30 Reservations can be made by calling 1-877-444-NRRS (6777)

Upper Meadows Campground
Located on the banks of the South Fork of the Ogden River about eight miles east of Huntsville at 5,300 feet. It has mostly cottonwood trees and other hardwood and shrubs. The season runs from about May 15 through September 30.

Lower Meadows Campground

This campground is located on the far side of the river from Highway 39. The entrance is the same as Upper Meadows, but instead of turning left, stay on the road, cross the bridge and turn to the right at the top of the hill. This campground is one of the most spacious with the individual sites quite far apart. The grass is usually tall and thick. The season runs approximately May 15 through September 30.  This site was rebuilt in 1998.

Willows Campground

Located next to the Upper Meadows campground in similar surroundings at 5,300 feet elevation. The season runs form May 15 through September 30.   This site was rebuilt in 1998.

MONTE CRISTO RECREATION COMPLEX

Monte Cristo Campground

This campground is at the highest elevation in the district at 9,000 feet. The individual campsites are surrounded by spruce and Douglas fir stands, adding their fresh scent to the clear, cool air. It is also the farthest away from Ogden of all the District's developed recreation sites at 50 miles. To get to Monte Cristo, travel Highway 39, a Utah State Scenic Highway, toward Woodruff, Utah. Watch for the campground sign along side the road just past the Cache/Weber County line.

Other Public Campgrounds

Weber County Memorial Park
This facility is owned and maintained by the Weber County Parks and Recreation Department. It is about one mile south of Highway 39 on the road to Causey Dam. The park features three large group reservation areas and approximately 75 individual picnic sites. For information and reservations, call 399-8491.

North Fork Park
Also owned and maintained by the Weber County Parks and Recreation Department. It is located north of Pineview Reservoir near the community of Liberty. Follow the signs from Pineview or Eden to get to North Fork Park. For information, call 399-8491.
