Heritage resources, rounding out the five areas of expertise, holds clues to past ecosystems, adds richness and depth to forest landscapes, provides links to living traditions, and helps transform a beautiful walk in the woods into an unforgettable encounter with history. The purpose of the heritage program is to protect significant heritage resources, share their value with the American people, and contribute relevant information and perspectives to natural resource management. Heritage projects range from designing and building a tool, such as a back-pack screen, to new materials for roofing that meet SHIPO standards, to creating the prototype for digital collection of archeological information in the Heritage Digital Toolkit.

To help ensure that wilderness remains intact as part of the forest landscape, the RP maintains information for the care, use, and restoration of wilderness areas.
