Sustainability Solutions

Sustainability requirements include:
  • Required Now

    • Use agency sustainability plans to measure, manage, and reduce greenhouse gasses.

    • Consume at least 5 percent renewable energy and generate as much renewable energy as possible on site.

    • Purchase and use environmentally preferable and biobased products, including paper with at least 30 percent recycled fiber.

    • Reduce toxic and hazardous material use.

    • All new and renovated buildings larger than 2,500 gross square feet (and energy-intense buildings) must meet the Guiding Principles for Federal Leadership in High Performance and Sustainable Buildings.

    • Use at least 95 percent EPEAT or Energy Star electronic products and dispose of them responsibly.

    • New regional, forest, or district offices, research offices and laboratories, and visitor centers larger than 10,000 gross square feet must achieve at least LEED silver certification.

  • 2013

    • Consume at least 7.5 percent renewable energy.

  • 2015

    • Recycle 50 percent of wastes.

    • Reduce water use by 16 pecent from 2007 levels.

    • At least 15 percent of all buildings larger than 10,000 gross square feet must meet the "Guiding Principles for Federal Leadership in High Performance and Sustainable Buildings." and agencies must be making progress toward meeting their goal for 100-percent compliance.

    • Reduce vehicle fleet fuel use by 20 percent from 2005 levels.

    • Increase non-petroleum fuel use by 10 percent annually.

    • Use plug-in hybrids when cost effective.

  • 2019

    • All buildings must be designed to produce as much energy as they consume (called net zero) by 2030.

  • 2020

    • Reduce vehicle fleet fuel use by 30 percent.

    • Reduce water use by 26 percent from 2007 levels.

    • Reduce greenhouse emissions by target set by agency.

  • 2030

    • All Federal buildings generate as much energy as they consume.
