Throop, Wes . 1999. Evaluation of Solar-Powered Lightning for Fire Camps. 9971 2855P. Missoula, MT: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Missoula Technology and Development Center.
The Missoula Technology and Development Center (MTDC) received a grant from the Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program to procure and field test photovoltaic power units for fire camp lighting. MTDC obtained 10 units from the Power Pod Corporation, modified them as needed, and tested five of them at a fire camp in Northern California. The testing showed that these units have the potential to be very useful in a fire camp setting, especially in sleeping areas and other locations where a premium is placed on silence. The testing also revealed a number of modifications that could be made to improve the storage, transportation, and use of these systems. The power units were turned over to the Cleveland National Forest for further evaluation.
