Neese, Jasen ; Oravetz, Steve . 1999. Energy Conservation Measures for Buildings. 9971 2333P. Missoula, MT: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Missoula Technology and Development Center.
Summarizes the results of 16 energy audits during the late 1990's that covered 35 Forest Service buildings. The most common recommendation was to retrofit existing fluorescent lights with magnetic ballasts (T12) to fluorescent lights with electronic ballasts (T8). Complete heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) upgrades were not found to be cost effective for most of the facilities audited, but system control upgrades and annual maintenance of existing systems were recommended as cost-saving measures. The Tech Tip includes information about web sites and publications that provide additional information on energy-saving measures for buildings.
