Commissioning a building is the systematic process of assuring that it performs in accordance with the design intent and the owner's operational needs. Commissioning is typically associated with new buildings, and implemented during the design and construction phase. It has proven itself as a means of decreasing operating costs and increasing occupant comfort. However, commissioning can also be applied to existing buildings to obtain these same benefits. In both cases, the end result is a building where all systems function properly in a way that is documented and maintainable over the life of the building.
