Beckley, Bob . 2010. Sustainability Solutions No. 8: Greening Fire Waste. 1051 2T09. Missoula, MT: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Missoula Technology and Development Center.

The Western Collective (which combines resources from Forest Service regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and the Rocky Mountain Research Station) is working with incident management teams to foster sustainable operations at fire camps. The collective's objectives for the 2011 fire season are to reduce the use of bottled beverages in fire camps and to audit waste streams in fire camps in hopes of finding ways to reduce waste. An ongoing project at the Missoula Technology and Development Center focuses on improving delivery of food and beverages to spike camps. During the 2011 fire season, cardboard containers with plastic bladders will be tested as possible replacements for the plastic buckets now being used.

Keywords: beverages, bottled water, dumpsters, fire camps, firefighters, green teams, hot cans, incident management teams, pallets, recycling, spike camps, sustainability, trash, waste, water tankers
