Sharkey, Brian . 2001. Wildland Firefighter Health & Safety Report: No. 4. 0151 2840. Missoula, MT: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Missoula Technology and Development Center. 1 p.
Describes the results of several studies of work capacity tests used to evaluate the fitness of firefighters. Studies used to develop the pack test are summarized. The pack test, used by the United States Forest Service, requires persons to carry a 45-pound pack for 3 miles in 45 minutes. The relation of preemployment tests to job duties and the potential adverse effects of preemployment tests to certain groups (such as females) are discussed. Medical examinations, now being considered for Federal firefighters, are discussed.
