We have identified six general trail bridge types: cable bridges, deck girder/truss bridges, side girder/truss (pony truss) bridges, arch bridges (deck or suspended), miscellaneous single unit bridges, and covered bridges. These different types of bridges, as well as different material types, have differing span limitations. In other words, all bridge types and materials will not work at all site locations. Longer crossings may have a very limited selection of bridge types and/or materials.

Appropriateness of bridge types and materials for Recreation Opportunity Spectrum classes is somewhat open to interpretation. We have attempted to give some general guidance, but trail bridge type and material selection may depend on personal preferences and interpretations. The goal of this Web site is to facilitate informed decisions through pictures, drawings, span guidelines, and comparisons.

Standard drawings/design aids are included. These drawings are in PDF format and can be viewed or printed using Adobe Acrobat Reader. The drawings are intended for INFORMATION ONLY or as an informational guide for a qualified engineer.
