Opening Ty and the inspectors in their lab coats, hardhats and clipboards gathered around a TV watching Joe’s audition tape (original video)… Joe: Good Morning and welcome to Deer River. I’m speaking to you today in hopes that the Deer River Ranger District gets selected for an Extreme Makeover. We’ve been under-funded in facilities for over 10 years here. I’ve got a highly motivated staff who really wants to do the right thing; we just don’t know where to get started. The Makeover Team could really help to get us focused. Help us find innovative ways to spend our money. We’ve had budget declines here for many years; many of you have experienced the same thing. Yet our operational costs are going through the roof. We spent over $100,000 just to fuel our fleet and operate our buildings last year. I know if we spend a few dollars in the right places we could save maybe $30-50,000 a year. That could fund an entire seasonal work force. I know we can make a difference. There are over 600 Ranger Districts across the country. Somebody needs to step up. The federal government is the single highest user of energy in this country. The Forest Service has been a conservation leader for over 100 years. It’s time we step up and take on sustainable operations. The Deer River Ranger District is up to the task. Ty: This is a unique opportunity for us to really help this District Ranger make a difference. Ranger Joe’s got some good ideas, he’s got motivated folks back at the district and his heart is in the right place. We can help Joe show the 584 District Rangers across the country that little changes can add up to big differences for the Forest Service, for the Government and for the United States of America. So are you with me? Can we help Ranger Joe? (very dramatic) Inspectors: Some wiping tears away, group rises, hands in … Yeah! Ty: Ranger Joe on Three….Ranger Joe – Let’s Go! Music with Logo Music with a look at the town of Deer River, Minnesota in September, 2007. Ty: Good morning and welcome to Extreme Makeover, District Ranger Edition. Today we are in beautiful Deer River, Minnesota, gateway to the Chippewa. The Deer River Ranger District of the Chippewa National Forest really needs our help. They haven’t had a facilities budget in 10 years. The fixtures in the office and the building are outdated and in desperate need of repair. We only have one year to complete the project. It is a monumental task. But I hear at the Deer River District, they have a great group of folks are up to the challenge. Come on let’s go to the Deer River Ranger District. Ty: Come on out Deer River District…it’s Extreme Makeover – District Ranger Edition. Crowd Noise – excited cheering……. Music and a review of the Six Footprints. 1. Fleet 2. Water 3. Energy 4. Purchasing 5. Waster Prevention/Recycling 6. Leadership Scene 2 Ty walking backwards in front of the Ranger District, talking to the camera as he is walking up the sidewalk, pauses before he enters… Ty: Well, it’s been a few weeks now since that surprise visit from our design team…. We analyzed the district’s needs and researched what could be done both structurally and financially. Ranger Joe and the district went through the fine folks at the SO, the RO and even Albuquerque to get some contracts finalized… now we need to get to work! Ranger Joe is on an extravagant business trip at some budget summit so we have one week to implement all the changes. We will have to work fast to get everything done before he comes back. We have some of the best local workers in the area and the whole community has come out to show their support. It is also the last week of the fiscal year, so everything has to go like clockwork, Ty looking at his watch, It’s time, lets go see what they’re doing. Camera stops as Ty opens the front door…once inside approaching the front desk… Ty: Check out all the stuff that’s going on. People not seen making construction noises (hammers, drills, bag of recycled cans rattling, etc.)… Bonnie: It is crazy in here, I can barely hear the phone ring. Ty: I know, that’s the sound of hard work. We are really starting to make some changes that are going to make a big difference. Ty turns to lead the camera into the hall, camera turns, in background worker walks by with ladder, another worker walks by with bag of garbage, etc… Slowly heading to the bathroom… Come on - Remember those leaky toilets? Scene 3 Rounding the corner, Ty almost runs into Barb walking down the hall… Ty: Hey there is Barb the toilet inspector… Barb frowns and looks unhappy, crosses her arms with a wrench in one hand…Ty responds somewhat humorously… Ty: I mean Barb our inspector on the design team supervising the water footprint which including replacing the toilets. So what’s happening here? Ty goes off screen, camera follows Barb into bathroom. Barb talks to the camera. Barb: Well, we have replaced the old ones with new low flow toilets. Between the office and bunkhouses they replaced seven of them. Come see. Jeremy is putting the final touches on the replaced toilets, sitting on one and trying to wiggle it to make sure it is secure… Jeremy: Yep it’s secure, smiles without knowing anyone is looking, and it is comfortable too! Jeremy is startled as Barb is walking up… Barb: Hey Jeremy, how are things going in here? Jeremy: Pretty good, we just finished the last one. Check it out. These are really are going to make a difference. They cost the district $150.00 for each one installed but the difference in water conservation is huge. Barb: On this district, we are making the effort… with the low flow toilets they will save over 73,000 gallons of water and $630.00 per year! Jeremy: That should pay for itself in 18 months. Barb: On this investment that payback will be a one and a half years. Imagine that, that is huge and that is what we are trying to do here… get extreme!!!!! Jeremy: Wow, that is extreme! Jeremy and Barb walk out of bathroom. Camera pans to Bruce sitting on toilet, pounding on his calculator… Bruce: Wow….these numbers are really adding up! If all 584 districts did this, we’d save 386,584 and 44 million gallons of water per year. Scene 4 James: Hey Michelle, what are you working on? Michelle: Hey James, these are our new recycling bins, everything is now separated for our recycler and now look at this, we just put them out and they are already full. We have bins to separate the plastic, paper, cans, card board, glass and even the timber marking paint cans. Motioning towards the door, Michelle takes James outside where a green rig is waiting with workers just finishing loading the back of the truck with timber marking cans. Ty is hiding in the pile of cans… Michelle: Hey Look! They are loading some timber marking cans to be brought to the recycler. Ty: Jumps out of cans. Wow – nice cans! Michelle: This district is going to be able to recycle over 1500 cans per year. James: That is over 450 pounds of recycled steel just on this district. What do you think we could get for that lump of coal in there? Referring to Ty… Ty looking hurt in the background… Bruce: with calculator: If all 584 districts were to carried out the same recycling practice, the Forest Service would be responsible for recycling over a quarter of a million pounds of steel per year. That’s enough steel to make 196 new vehicles. Scene 5 Michelle and James come from back entry way… and stops by the paper recycle and looks in… James: Pulls out some paper Look the district has set their computers to print duplex; this will save a ton of paper. Michelle: The savings is huge; it would save $600.00 per year or 24 aspen trees. James is just about to toss the papers back in the recycle bin when they notice funny pictures of Joe. James: Laughing, looks like Ranger Joe even figured it out! Michelle and James walk out of picture… Bruce: Standing in the woods Wow, $600.00 per year and 24 trees… that would mean $350,000 and over 14,000 trees for all 584 ranger districts if they switched to printing duplex. Scene 6 Tim is the electrician, Audrey and Mike looking at the final touches on installing the new light bulbs and sensor switches… Mike: Hey I want to show you how your new light sensors work. Audrey: I think I have a pretty good idea, they must have timers on them, I was in the bathroom earlier and all of a sudden it was lights out! You know what they say, timing is everything. Mike: Well it is Audrey; and they are on timers, I know those new toilets are comfortable but we don’t want to leave anyone stranded in the bathroom. We can make adjustments to the timers. These sensors will save the district $3,000.00 per year. Audrey: That’s great, what’s going on over there? Mike: This is Sparky the electrician is just finishing installing the new T8 light bulbs. Sparky: Yup, this is the last bulb installed in this office. I’ve put in 346 new T-8 bulbs. Mike: Just by replacing these bulbs we will be saving 36.4 tons of carbon; which is fantastic! Let’s go down and check out our old archeological dig in that old furnace in the basement. Scene 7 Audrey and Mike are walking into furnace room; sees Ty trying to get into the new furnace… Ty: Hey, how do you get into this thing? Mike: Hey Ty, you know there has been some changes in here…that old dinosaur is extinct. Audrey: So what is different about this new one? Mike: Two things, for one, you cannot climb into it. Two, we have gone from about 60% to over 95% efficiency. This will save the ranger district about $4,600.00 per year based on current natural gas prices. Audrey: That savings is enough for me to possibly hire a seasonal employee next year. Ty: Wow - now that’s extreme – let’s go! Bruce: Let’s see…..If all 584 districts made similar changes the Forest Service would reduce their annual energy costs by $2.3 million and the reduction in CO2 emissions would be like removing four thousand vehicles from the road - Wow, that’s one fifth of the Forest Service fleet! Scene 8 Ben and Amanda, walking by the line of fleet, golf cart first, cars, then trucks. Smaller fleet line than last time. Amanda: Motioning towards the golf cart Is golf part of the wellness program now? Where can I sign up? Ben: You wish, but we have done some major changes. The district fleet has been reduced by 6 vehicles and traded their big SUV in for a car and changed some of their 4 wheel drives to 2 wheel drive vehicles. Amanda: That has to save us a lot of money especially with the high gas prices. Ben: The district will save $13,000 in fleet costs per year. Plus, they will save an additional $10,000 in fuel costs. Amanda: That is huge, that could fund enough seasonal for both recreation and timber. Ty grabs golf clubs and jumps on golf cart driving away in the background. Bruce is lying on hood of fire engine. Bruce: Wow…this can’t be right, punches the keys on the calculator, if 584 districts reduced their fleet by 6 vehicles the combined savings in the first year would be $14,000,000.00. Scene 9 Ty pulls up on golf cart, talking to the camera… Ty: Boy, things are really starting to shape up and it looks like we might really get it done in time for Ranger Joe’s return in just a couple of days. Let’s go check up on Ranger Joe and see how he’s doing. Joe is sitting in front of computer ready to watch video. Ty: Well, let’s see what they got for me…..I hope they found me some savings after the budget meeting this week, we’re sure going to need it! Ty: Hey Ranger Joe how’s it going? Hope you’re having fun at your big budget meeting….’cause back here at Deer River we’re making lots of changes that we know you’re going to love…..some are a little nutty, but I think you’re going to like most of them….come on – I’ll ‘em to you. Joe: Oh…they’re hauling the dinosaur up the stairs piece by piece. Joe watches video and looks a little emotional. Ty: Good job everybody…..come on out of there – get rid of that old dinosaur. Joe: Not my dinosaur, how are we going to heat the building? Joe: Where are they taking the green monster truck? Ty: And Joe remember we’re helping you to reduce your fleet?…..that one can go – go on – get that one out of here …..thanks – say goodbye to the big truck! Boy that was easy, wasn’t it? Ty: Well let’s go see how the leaky toilet gang is doing……come on….hey everybody how’s it going? Gang in Bathroom: I’ve got to send some paperwork to Albuquerque! Joe: Geesh, I have never seen people work so hard in the bathroom before. Something else. Joe: Talking to the people in the budget meeting… Wow, that’s amazing…. And disturbing, I hope they don’t break anything and clean everything up. I sure hope that Ty knows what he’s doing. Scene 10 Ty is starting to work on Joe’s office. Ty walks into Joe’s office… Ty: I need to begin my special Joe project – but before I do that I need to know what makes him tick….let’s check his office for some clues. Hello ladies……I’m Ty……I need to get started on my Ranger Joe project, let’s see if I can see exactly WHO Ranger Joe. Ty looking at Joe’s pictures of him out doors, beaver dam, elk photo… I am sure getting a good idea of what Joe likes… Ty finds “Acting for Dummies” book on the desk…as women are helping take down pictures in his office. Ty: What this?...... Acting for Dummies book? Is this Joe’s? Jen: Actually, I heard he had a big part in a children’s movie this summer. Amanda: Whatever! He played Sponge Bob Square Pants in a Nickelodeon Kid’s event at the local summer festival. Ty: Doesn’t sound like he is getting far with that acting career. I hope he doesn’t give up his day job. Ty: Okay, getting back to work… Who are you Joe?......Joe, Joe, Joe. Looking at picture of Joe admiringly, Joe is a great leader, he has sustainability standards in his employees’ performance evaluations….they even had a green team logo contest and the winner will get a bike. What a great green gift. Boy does he know how to get people motivated. Scene 11 Jen and Heather are in the hallway by the cleaning closet. Jen: So what’s with all the green cleaning products? Heather: Well, they are eco friendly and better for everyone in the building and in the campgrounds. Jen: No, I mean they are literally GREEN. Heather: Well, what other color would you use for “green” cleaning supplies? Jen: She is referencing the bottle. Well I guess green works?!?! Heather: Naturally! Come see what other green purchases we’ve made. Scene flips to Bruce sitting on a mop bucket in the cleaning closest in the sink area. Bruce: Punching the keys; - it’s hard to put a value on the health and safety of Forest Service employees. But, by removing those caustic chemicals from the workplace creates a safer work environment. Scene 12 In the supply room, Jen and Heather are looking at binders on shelf… Heather: These are those binders I was talking about; see you can unscrew the metal part and recycle both parts. Jen: That is just so exciting! Heather: I know, check out these pencils, they are made from recycled newspaper, if you look closely you can almost read it. Jen: Wow - Do you have anything else recycled for us? Heather: Yes it is, you now have recycled folders, CD sleeves and post it notes. Jen: Oh My! Scene 13 Ty running around getting everyone to hurry up, yelling at people with mega phone… Scenes of people cleaning up, vacuum, etc. Ty: Hurry up! Everybody needs to hurry up and finish – Ranger Joe is on his way – hurry! Hey what are doing down there – get to work! Oh yeah, that’s the right tool for the right job! Hey that thing doesn’t work unless it moves, hello Kitty, oh hey you what are you doing – get to work. Scene 14 Ty: Hey everybody……Ranger Joe is coming back from his budget summit….let’s give him a big welcome. Everyone gathers outside, cheering, Ty is yelling “he’s coming, he’s coming”. Fire engine parked in front of office. Travis brings Joe on the golf cart blindfolded. As they park, Travis helps Joe out of the cart and crowd is chanting “Ranger Joe” “Ranger Joe”, Ty takes off the blind fold. Crowd is still cheering and waving signs, Joe address the crowd, waves, etc. Crowd: chanting Ranger Joe – Ranger Joe – Ranger Joe! Ty: Let’s get that blindfold off……Welcome to your Green District – Welcome back…….Let me reintroduce the design team, in case you forgot them… Ben, Mike, Barb, Michelle and Heather. Ty: Are you ready to see your new green district? Joe: I am! Ty: Everybody - you know what to say, TY, Joe and crowd: Move that truck! Joe: Gets excited, then instantly confused… You didn’t do anything! Crowd: Check inside! Ty: Why don’t we go inside and check out your new district. Joe and Ty run hurriedly towards the office. Quick scenes inside the building….. Barb: By changing to low flow toilets we have reduced the districts’ consumption of water by 73,000 gallons and saved $630.00 per year. Joe: Wow that’s a lot of water and a lot of money! Heather: Joe we know that health and safety of your employees is of the utmost importance to you, so we removed all caustic chemicals and replaced them with environmentally friendly cleaners. We also added more recycled office supplies to your workplace, further reducing your carbon footprint. Joe: Wow…that’s great! Joe: Wow…that’s the PK Mach series Mike: Joe we know that your budgets are down and we worked real hard to save you some money….by changing your furnace we increased your efficiency from 60% to 95%, this thing rocks Michelle: By getting you recycle bins; you are now recycling paper, glass, and plastic, aluminum, cardboard and steel. Joe: Wow…now we’re starting to get green. Scene 15 Inside the office, outside of Joe’s office - Ty is with Joe…. Ty: Well, Joe what do you think? Joe: It’s amazing, I can’t believe that you got all that done in a week. Bruce: Pops in Do you know that your total savings is going to be $32,000 per year? Joe: I will be able to fund my seasonal workforce next year! Ty: Yes Joe, but there’s one more thing that makes me excited…..This week your office was my special project, I know you are big into the outdoors and fishing, I hope you like it, take a look…tell me what you think! Ty opens the door to Joe’s office – Joe looks in with amazement Joe: Drops to his knees, puts his hands over his mouth with tears… It’s perfect! Scene 16 Ty and Ranger Joe walking in the forest Ty: Well Ranger Joe we did it….we completed the first phase of the Deer River Ranger District Extreme Makeover…..what were some of the challenges you saw along the way? Joe: Well, you know there were a lot – but the biggest thing was a cultural shift – a real institutional change for the district and for the agency…..I didn’t have someone walk into the office and hand me their keys and tell me they had one too many – these are real life issues for people and I know they are tough. Ty: We know there are some – some changes that is – up ahead….so what’s next for the Deer River Ranger District? Joe: Ty: Ranger Joe….with everything said and done – would you do it all over again if you had to? Joe: Absolutely – this was a great learning experience for us - the district came together well as a team. I’m real blessed with the people I have and you saw a lot of individual leaders there as well And – the numbers don’t lie – we were able to learn something. This is great. It really is extreme! Ty: Well we know that a bunch of individuals did become a great team at the end and we know it takes a lot of great leadership from you Joe – so we want to thank you on behalf of the extreme team, thank you so much for your efforts. Joe: Thank you Ty and thank you to your team! Ty: Well, Ranger Joe there is only one last thing to say… is that golf cart fun to drive? Joe: Oh it’s great – jump in with us! Ty: I thought you’d never ask. Kelly and Audrey walking down the hall again… Audrey: Wow I can’t believe we really pulled it off. Kelly: You know this isn’t just a fad; one district really can make a difference! Extreme Makeover logo. Music Joe being pulled over by a Forest Service Law enforcement officer……facts and figures roll to the right of the screen.
