Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventories

In 2009, President Obama signed Executive Order (EO) 13514, “Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy and Economic Performance,” which required all agencies to submit a comprehensive GHG inventory and establish a percentage reduction target. GHG reporting will help Forest Service understand its emission profile and improve environmental performance in six environmental footprint areas: energy, water, green purchasing, fleet and transportation, waste prevention and recycling, and sustainability leadership.

  • Three (3) Sustainable Operations micro-grants, starting at $2,500, will be awarded to the Region, Station, or Area with the highest percent response rate. As of September 30, the survey close date, the top three respondents were:
    • the Northeastern Area, State & Private Forestry with a 60.3% response rate,
    • the Northern Research Station with a 59.7% response rate, and
    • Region 9 with a 37.3% response rate.

  • The Forest Service is the first federal land management agency to join the EPA Climate Leaders program.
  • This partnership will help the FS work to develop wide-ranging climate change strategies to reduce the agency’s environmental impact.

Pilot Locations

There are pilot locations which represent the broad geographic and administrative diversity of the Agency. Once completed, these pilot demonstration sites will allow us to develop an Agency wide template to inventory our GHG emissions and make changes in a corporate wide approach.
