Video Guide to Fuels Treatment Practices for Ponderosa Pine

Abstract

2009 Climate Change Research Strategy

The video is a companion to RMRS General Technical Report RMRS-GTR-198, A Comprehensive Guide to Fuels Treatment Practices in the Black Hills, Colorado Front Range, and Southwest.

The video examines characteristics of ponderosa pine forests in the three ecoregions and presents specific mechanical and prescribed burning techniques, circumstances under which they can be applied, and the expected reductions in fuels hazard. The report and video identify conditions and practices where management intervention is appropriate to reduce fuels hazards while attempting to restore the forest community to a more natural condition. Factors to consider when planning and selecting treatments are based on bring the expertise of fire scientists and managers working in these areas.
