Ecology of the Northern Goshawk on the Kaibab Plateau, Arizona

RMRS scientists have been studying the ecology of the Northern Goshawk on the Kaibab Plateau for the past 20 years! Much of what is known about the ecology of goshawks in the Southwest was developed by RMRS scientists and their partners, and these scientists have also been actively engaged in transferring this knowledge to managers. RMRS scientists today continue to develop new knowledge on the goshawk and its habitat, synthesizing existing information, and working with managers to integrate habitat requirements for the goshawk and its important prey species.

Projects

Effective Forest Management

Managers increasingly understand the level of compatibility between research on goshawk habitat, ecological restoration, sustainability, and restoration of fire-adapted ecosystems. However, we need to improve our understanding of how to disperse and sustain habitats of plants and animals in the goshawk food web in large landscapes. More »

Restoring Composition & Structure in Southwestern Forests

We present a management framework based on a science synthesis of reference conditions, forest ecology, and lessons learned during implementation of the restoration framework. More »

Habitat Quality

The northern goshawk is an apex predator in most forests in the US and Canada. It is a species of concern, in particiular whether forest management has negatively effected goshawk population viability by reducing its habitat quality. More »
