Involucral bract:

Blade: Shorter than the inflorescence
Sheath-shape: Linear
Mouth: Shallowly U-shaped or truncate

Spikes:

Lowest: Short-exserted, ascending
Upper: Generally densely clustered

Pistillate scales:

Size and color: Less than 0.2 mm wide, red brown with a pale midrib
Pubescence: Ciliate near the tip

Perigynium:

Color: Generally green to reddish brown, occasionally purple
Length: 3­4.5
Width: 0.9­1.6
Margins: Generally none or greater than one-half the achene width
Pubescence: Ciliate near and on the beak, occasionally hirsute on the body
