Involucral bract:

Blade: Longer than the inflorescence
Sheath-shape: Linear or tapering to the wide mouth
Mouth: Generally Y- or V-shaped, with a purple margin

Spikes:

Lowest: Often long-exserted, more or less nodding
Upper: Often clustered

Pistillate scales:

Size and color: Brown to purple
Pubescence: Ciliate on the margin and midrib

Perigynium:

Color: Brown to purple
Length: 3.2­5.5 mm
Width: 0.9­2 mm
Margins: Less than one-half the achene width
Pubescence: Sparsely pubescent when young
