A protocol and methods for monitoring the major physical, chemical, and biological components of stream ecosystems are presented. The monitoring protocol is organized into four stages. At stage 1 information is obtained on a basic set of parameters that describe stream ecosystems. Each following stage builds upon stage 1 by increasing the number of parameters and the detail and frequency of the measurements. Stage 4 supplements analyses of stream biotic structure with measurements of stream function: carbon and nutrient processes. Standard methods are presented that were selected or modified through extensive field application for use in remote settings.

Ground water elevations are typically determined from observation wells or piezometric wells. In streamside areas, the subsurface free water elevation is often monitored in studies of riparian plant communities, nutrient transport, and seasonal waterflow direction. While professional well drilling is limited by accessibility and cost, it is possible to manually install shallow wells along riparian and floodplain corridors. The fabrication and use of three tools to assist in the manual installation of shallow ground water observation wells are described in this report. These tools are easily fabricated at a local machine shop. A method for calibrating pressure transducers is also described.

Aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) stands are in decline throughout the Interior Western United States because of fire suppression, overbrowsing by domestic livestock and native ungulates, and forest succession. We measured summertime soil temperatures in stable aspen, decadent aspen, and mixed aspen/conifer stands; a mixed aspen/conifer clearcut; a mixed aspen/conifer forest that was burned in a lightning-caused fire; and a decadent aspen stand and mixed aspen/conifer stand that received prescribed burns. Soil temperature fluctuations and mean soil temperatures were greater in cut and burned areas than in untreated stands. In untreated stands, mean soil temperature increased in the order: mixed aspen/conifer < stable aspen < decadent aspen. Soils under the closed canopy of mixed aspen/conifer stands tended to remain cool in the summer favoring organic matter accumulation. The relatively open canopy of decadent aspen stands allowed for increased light penetration and soil heating favoring organic matter breakdown. Cutting and burning greatly increased summertime shallow soil temperature, also favoring increased organic matter turnover and aspen suckering. Postdisturbance regrowth of grasses and forbs and aspen suckering shaded soils. Eventually, soil temperature in treated or disturbed areas should approach that of stable aspen stands.
