The Custer National Forest administers a total of 1,187,143 acres* of land with 73,536 acres of this total extending into South Dakota. Twenty-eight percent of the total area administered by the Custer is in a reserved designation such as Wilderness. There were 195 FIA sample locations within the Custer National Forest, of which 105 locations were classified as forested, 87 locations were classified as either nonforest or water, and 3 locations were inaccessible.
