Programs and Responsibilities of the Forest Service

The Forest Service is required, under the Resources Planning Act of 1974, to prepare and periodically update "a description of Forest Service programs and responsibilities in research, cooperative programs, and management of the National Forest System, their interrelationships, and the relationship of these programs and responsibilities to public and private activities."  This charge was last accomplished in 1989 with publication of GTR-RM-176.  This work will update that publication and will be a valuable resource for both internal and external audiences desiring information about the broad scope of Forest Service programs and relationships.  The Rocky Mountain Research Station will lead this effort, in collaboration with Strategic Planning and Resource Assessment Staff and Resource Valuation and Use Research Staff.  Major programs discussed include the National Forest System, Research and Development, State and Private Forestry, Wildland Fire Management, International Programs, Law Enforcement and Investigations, and Senior, Youth and Volunteer Programs.
