Janie Canton-Thompson is a technology transfer specialist with the Bitterroot Ecosystem Management Research Project (BEMRP). A fourth generation Montanan, she received a B.A. with high honors in sociology in 1971 and an M.A. in sociology in 1974, both from the University of Montana. She completed her Ph.D. in 1988 at the University of Colorado, Boulder, in sociology. After working for several years as a health insurance program specialist for the Bureau of Health Insurance in Seattle, and temporarily with the Forest Service Northern Region in the public affairs and land status divisions, she became a sociologist for the Bureau of Reclamation, Durango (CO) Project Office. In 1987, she left the Bureau to complete her academic work and pursue her interest in the sociology of natural resource management as a private consultant. In 1999, she assumed her current position at RMRS where she edits various publications, including "Eco-Report," and manages BEMRP's website, as well as providing editorial support to the economics research work unit.
