Dendrochronology
| Basic Tree Rings Sample Preparation Techniques for Aging Aspen by
Lance Asherin and Steve Mata
| Aspen can be an extremely
difficult species to age accurately. Using the proper equipment
can save time and improve your results. |
Producing High Quality Cores
| Core
Samples |
- A sharp and clean increment bore is critical.
- Keep a 90 degree angle to the bole to avoid compressing or
twisting the core.
- With a clean borer you will see some score lines along the
side of the core and can use them to properly align the core
for mounting.
- A dry core can be steamed to remove any twists and then
mounted to align the score lines.

| Disk Samples |
 |
- Cut straight and thin disks in the field.
- Broken disks can be reassembled.
- Start with a hand planer to even the surface.
|
| Results |
| Although field cruisers routinely
attempt it, un-sanded aspen increment cores are nearly impossible
to age. Proper preparation of Disk and Increment core samples can
enhance the fine ring structure and yield more accurate
measurements. Applying Fehling's solution will darken the late
summer wood providing distinct rings for correct identification. |
