Dr. Janie Canton-Thompson, Social Scientist

Janie Canton-Thompson is a social scientist. A fourth generation Montanan, she received a B.A. with high honors in sociology in 1971 and an M.A. in sociology in 1974, both from the University of Montana. She completed her Ph.D. in 1988 at the University of Colorado, Boulder, in sociology.  After working for several years as a health insurance program specialist for the Bureau of Health Insurance in Seattle, and temporarily with the Forest Service Northern Region in the public affairs and land status divisions, she became a sociologist for the Bureau of Reclamation, Durango (CO) Project Office.  In 1987, she left the Bureau to complete her academic work and pursue her interest in the sociology of natural resource management as a private consultant.  In 1999, she began working at RMRS, editing various publications, including "Eco-Report," managing BEMRP's website, as well as providing editorial support to the economics research work unit. Currently her work is involved with the fire suppression incident command team interviews and surveys, and takes her to many locations in the Forest Service community.
